Education for Patients

Education for Medical Professionals

Allegheny General's commitment to exceptional care of the heart extends to the education of future physicians and specialists. The depth and scope of Allegheny's educational program mirrors that of its patient-care services.

CME Events

  • Annual “Cardiovascular Medicine Update” at Nemacolin held every March.
  • Annual “Innovations in Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension” held every September

Cardiology Fellowship
The three-year program provides a strong set of core clinical experiences and didactic programs in all areas of cardiology, as well as large blocks of elective time that can be devoted to research and/or in-depth training in one or more subspecialty areas.

In addition, fourth-year programs in interventional cardiology, heart failure, and in noninvasive imaging (cardiac MRI, advanced echocardiography and nuclear cardiology) are offered annually. Also, the institute offers highly focused programs for subspecialty areas of study, including its renowned PH Preceptorship Program and Heart Failure Preceptorship Programs.

Thoracic Surgery Residency
Allegheny General Hospital has over 50 years of experience in graduate medical education and currently supports twenty-seven ACGME accredited programs. Included in these are all of the core programs necessary for the education of practitioners in cardiothoracic and vascular disease.
The educational functions for cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery at Allegheny reside within the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. The Department faculty is an ideal mix of surgeons in both early and mid-career and interacts cohesively. The program director and two of the faculty are active members of the Thoracic Surgery Director's Association. Well over 120 thoracic surgery residents and Fellows have received training at Allegheny since 1953. Three distinguished surgeons have directed the residency program in that time: Edward M. Kent, M.D., George J. Magovern, Sr., M.D. and, since 1995, George J. Magovern, Jr., M.D. Since 1986 forty-two residents have graduated from the program. The program has an excellent reputation for preparing residents for the demands of professional practice; all have been successful in securing positions prior to graduation. The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery also offers a two-year Fellowship in Vascular Surgery; cardiothoracic residents are encouraged to work with fellowship faculty to gain exposure to this important field. Allegheny General is very well known for the collegial atmosphere and commitment to cooperation demonstrated by the medical and surgical specialties. It thus offers an excellent environment for both patient care and education.

Vascular Fellowship
The Vascular Surgery Fellowship is a two-year accredited program fostered in an environment of progressively graded clinical and operative experience. A comprehesive foundation in vascular surgery, this fellowship offers clinical experience including the core service rotation, an endovascular interventional rotation, a clinical non-invasive vascular lab experience and a research experience.

Summer Internships
The Allegheny Heart Institute offers an annual 10-week summer internship program for college students majoring in biology and pre-medicine. Through this program, students get the chance to experience day-to-day life inside a hospital research laboratory.
