Conferences

The Program is committed to providing outstanding didactic learning opportunities to complement clinical teaching. Weekly academic conferences are held each Tuesday from
7 - 10 am and 4 - 5 pm.

Surgical Grand Rounds, held in cooperation with the general surgery residency program, begins the day at 7 am.

Cardiothoracic teaching conference, based on the TSDA curriculum, is held at 8 am. Topics are presented by a resident with the faculty leading a discussion of relevant cases and scenarios as they might be used in the ABTS board exam. Several times each year the teaching conference is taught in conjunction with the cardiology residency teaching program. These combined conferences focus on the integration of medical and surgical approaches to heart disease.

Chest Conference, sponsored by the pulmonary service, is held each Tuesday at 9 am.

The 4 pm conference hour rotates between Cardiothoracic Surgery Morbidity & Mortality conference, Cardiac and General Thoracic Surgery Journal Clubs and the monthly Department/Academic Meeting where residents and faculty meet for updates and discussions on residency and hospital issues.

The Department sponsors three visiting professor lectures each year: one from each Division. Each lecture is preceded by a dinner the evening before the lecture to allow faculty and residents to talk informally with the guest speaker.

Residents are also welcome to attend weekly cardiac transplant conferences and bi-monthly research meetings.

Residents in the second year of training become members of a resident’s advisory council which holds a bi-monthly dinner meeting with senior hospital management to discuss residency issues.
