Srinivas Murali, MD, Director, Allegheny General Hospital Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and Medical Director, Gerald McGinnis Cardiovascular Institute, was recently awarded the Distinguished Physician Award from the American Association of Cardiologists of Indian Origin (AACIO).

The AACIO is a national organization that provides a central forum for physicians and scientists of Indian origin in the U.S.A. who have interest in cardiovascular diseases. This award is given annually to one or two physicians nationwide for their outstanding contributions in the field of cardiology. It was presented to Dr. Murali during the annual meeting of the AACIO in Orlando, FL, last month. 

Dr. Murali is an internationally recognized heart failure, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary hypertension specialist. In 2004, he was honored as one of the nation’s “Best Heart Failure Specialists” by Business Week. He was also recognized for his contributions to cardiovascular sciences by the World Congress of Clinical and Preventive Cardiology in 2008 and 2009.

Over the past 24 years, Dr. Murali has authored or co-authored more than 130 publications and book chapters in the fields of heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

His research interests include developing new treatments for heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, improving outcomes after cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, developing new biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis in these patients, and recognizing genetic markers for sudden cardiac death and heterogeneity in treatment responses in cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Murali is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the American Heart Association, Heart Failure Society of America and the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is a member of the Scientific Leadership Council of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. Dr. Murali is certified both by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Subspecialty Board in Cardiovascular Diseases.
