Education for Medical Professionals

Educational Opportunities

Allegheny General's commitment to exceptional care of the heart extends to the education of future physicians and specialists. The depth and scope of Allegheny's educational program mirrors that of its patient-care services.

CME Conferences

The CVI hosts an annual CME Symposium each fall titled “Innovations in Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension.”

Fellowships and Residencies

In addition to the CVI’s outstanding cardiology fellowship program,  the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program  offers a one year Heart Failure Fellowship Program. This program provides intensive inpatient and outpatient experience with the advanced heart failure patient, participation with the cardiac transplantation and ventricular assist device teams, and research opportunities.
The Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Allegheny has an outstanding and highly sought-after residency program in cardiac and general thoracic surgery. This two year program develops exceptional skills, knowledge and judgement in the surgical treatment of all forms of adult heart disease, including coronary bypass, valve repair and replacement, thoracic aneurysm repair, heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices. Residents also become proficient in surgical treatment of diseases of the lungs, esophagus and chest wall.

Preceptorships

Specialized Heart Failure Preceptorships are available for medical professionals. Allegheny’s CVI is the only N-HeFT site (National Heart Failure Training) in western Pennsylvania. These one or two day workshops include interactive discussions on optimal approaches to HF management in a didactic setting, as well as clinical experience and practical application workshops, tailored to the needs of the visiting professionals.
